I share John Blyberg’s excitement about Microsoft’s Surface. Imagine the possiblities! How about…
- Face2face reference calls between patron and librarian? Of course, then we might be asked to do something like diagnose a rash or something worse. (Okay, I know. Like that hasn’t already happened!)
- Somebody needs a page of text? Set that sucker down on the Surface, scan it, and send it to the user.
- Gotta pay fines? Plunk down your credit card and clear your account.
- Someone in California wants a copy of a rare map in our collection? Spread it out on Surface and, voila!
What else can you imagine?

Between Apple’s iPhone and this, which acts much like it, only more extensible – maybe that explains the chumminess that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates exhibited at the D conference in California last week. Watched the video of them talking and it was like the bitter acrimonious Windows vs. Mac battles had not occurred.
Oh. What else? I like the idea of looking into this for library use. Part two/flip side – more staff who are resistant to change.
