I’ve been playing around with a couple of those people locating services for phones and I’m wondering if there’s an application out there for libraries.
Check out http://GoWalla.com which revolves around finding virtual objects in the real world. I’m betting Pat Rapp will dig this. How can the library pounce on this? Can we play the game and add virtual objects within our facilities?
Also look at FourSquare – http://foursquare.com/ - can we create an atmosphere where people habitually check in from our libraries?

David Lee King blogged about this recently at http://www.davidleeking.com/2010/01/25/foursquare-and-libraries-anything-there/ and a follow-up at http://www.davidleeking.com/2010/02/01/foursquare-and-libraries-definitely-something-there/
I don’t have a smartphone yet, so I have not played with foursquare, but I do think this could be very cool, especially as a summer reading program (try to encourage people to check in at all the county libraries and get a prize) or to build those relationships with the museums that you talked about recently (get points for viewing the dinosaurs at both RMSC and Central, for example.) Each library has unique collections and programs, but most people go to just one.
There was some talk a while ago about creating a facebook game. This would be far easier and would get people out into the community, which has benefits far beyond a facebook app.
