In the car this morning, I was listening to a radio show out of New York City where the morning crew was talking about how frustrating it is to have a dead cell phone battery in the middle of your day or evening. It occurred to me that perhaps libraries could begin offering charging stations for cell phones and other devices. The equipment cost would be minimal…really just the cost of purchasing the cables…but I have no way to predict the effect on utility charges. I can’t imagine they’d be astronomical.
So what do you think? Anyone in MCLS want to test my theory?

I think the big issue would be that people would have to remember to bring their phone chargers with them. Providing an outlet shouldn’t be too expensive, and wouldn’t require more than some conveniently located power strips. The problem is that there is no universal connector. I was in Michigan a few weeks ago without my charger. My Droid is a Motorola and I was not able to use my nephew’s charger even though he has a Droid, because his is HTC.
And then when you add iPhones, iPods, iPads, laptops, etc. to the mix, I think all we can do is provide an outlet to plug into, which I don’t think is what you’re referring to.
People who have the forethought to bring their charger are prepared to just find the closest outlet, anyway.
